The unanimously approved 46-acre biofuel plant will generate 30 megawatts of energy through the renewable consumption of biomass like farm waste and bio-energy crops, enough to power 35,000 homes.

Pinal Power is owned by Phoenix-based Arbutus Bio-Energy, which develops, constructs and operates renewable energy facilities. Robert Buckingham, president of Arbutus co-owner Western Bio-Energy, told those in attendance he was excited to finally premier the project. “We wanted to keep this in the background until we were convinced the project was moving forward and everything was lining up to make it happen,” Buckingham said.

Maricopa mayor Anthony Smith thanked Pinal Power for doing their homework and was glad to see an ambitious project avoid being hindered by budget woes. “Any time a city in this economy gains a manufacturing job-generating project, it’s a huge win,” he said.

Construction on the plant will begin in late 2010 and is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2012. The proposed plant is similar to a gas-fired power system, generating steam that spins a turbine through the burning of materials, but instead burning renewable fuel like landscape and crop waste as well as high-thermal crops. Buckingham said the company will use 300,000 tons of biowaste a year and plans to allow residents to drop off approved burning materials, such as tree trimmings and untreated wood, instead of dumping them.

Buckingham said while solar and wind power operations are subject to fluctuations in the weather, the Pinal Power plant will consistently generate power non-stop. Buckingham pointed out that biofuel is the largest renewable energy industry in the country. He said solar energy gets a lot of headlines, but that Arizona residents will soon know more about the viability of biofuel. “It’s got a lot of attributes that wind and solar don’t have,” he said.

Pinal County Sheriff’s Office offers new ways for citizens to stay informed

8/30/2010 8:12:04 AM

Pinal County, AZ--In its continuing effort to create a safe and secure community, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has created a program to offer free, secure, two-way communication with the public.
